Ultraviolet (UV) Filter Thin Film Coatings

coating uv filters

Thin film coatings are extremely thin layers of materials (such as TiO2, SiO2, MgF2, gold, aluminum etc…), which can be applied to the surface of a substrate like glass, metal or germanium, to effect a change in its optical properties. Effects such as reflection, refraction, anti reflection and conductivity can be produced and modified by expert calibration of the number of layers and the respective thicknesses of the thin film coatings in relation to the incidental wavelengths of light.

Ultraviolet (UV) Filter Thin Film Coatings

Reynard  Corporation provides Ultraviolet (UV) thin film coatings for a range of  applications in the aerospace, commercial and military markets. Types  of Ultraviolet (UV) thin film coatings include Longwave Pass (LWP),  Shortwave Pass (SWP), and Anti Reflection (AR) coatings.

Examples of Ultraviolet (UV) Thin Film Coatings

  • Ultraviolet Anti Reflection (UAR): This  ultraviolet anti reflection coating reduces surface reflection from  quartz or fused silica substrates to less than 0.3% from 0.2 to 0.3  microns.
  • Ultraviolet Aluminum Coating (UV Al): This  ultraviolet coating creates UV mirrors by means of a thin coating of  aluminum. Protection is then added through a coating of magnesium  fluoride, though the mirrors still need to be handled with great care  due to the thinness of the coatings. The resulting mirrors are useable  below 200nm, and have a reflectance rate above 88%.
  • Ultraviolet Enhanced Aluminum Coating: These ultraviolet coatings have a reflectance rate of 95% between 250 and 350 nm (and an approximate 80% reflection rate of visible light).

Ultraviolet (UV) Coating Process

Our thin film coating facility has 21 vacuum chambers, ranging from an 18” bell jar to a 54” fully automatic box coater, all in a 4000 square foot Class 1000 clean room. Processes include electron beam, ion assisted and resistance source deposition. We have the capability to coat virtually any size and shape up to and including substrates 50 in diameter.

Available substrates include:

  • Alon
  • BK-7 (borosilicate crown glass)
  • Calcium Fluoride (CaF2)
  • Fused Silica
