Infrared Technology

Reynard Corporation supplies custom infrared (IR) technology to the aerospace, commercial and military markets. Reynard has been a leading supplier of infrared technology to the military, from infrared windows from far infrared (FIR) filters to precision infrared (IR Filters) and filters for missile targeting systems.

Our optical fabrication capabilities enable us to shape, grind and polish a vast range of custom and stock precision optical components for infrared technology applications. Our thin film coating department can apply a full range of anti reflection (AR), attenuation, longwave pass (LWP), shortwave pass (SWP), and other optical coatings effective in the infrared (IR) and far infrared (FIR) bands.

Reynard's Standard Infrared Specifications 

Reynard's windows are designed for use in precision optical systems. The clear aperture of these windows measures 90% of the diameter. Optical transmission is high with little or no distortion of the transmitted signal. Circumferences are ground and both edges are beveled. Other specifications:

Diameter Tolerance: +/- 0.1mm

Thickness Tolerance: +/- 0.1mm

Flatness: < 3 Fringe Per Inch At 632.8nm

Wedge: < 3 Minutes

Surface Quality: 80 – 50 Scratch and Dig

Standard Infrared Windows are also manufactured in Germanium (Ge), Silicon (Si), Zinc Selenide (ZnSe) and Zinc Sulfide (ZnS).

IR Thin Film Coatings

Reynard Corporation manufactures thin film coated optical filters, for precise filtering and reflection of radiation throughout the spectrum, including near infrared (NIR), infrared (IR) and far infrared (FIR). Among the types of optical filters that can be supplied and designed to specifications are anti reflection (AR), longwave pass (LWP), shortwave pass (SWP), multi-band and attenuation filters. Some standard examples:

• Infrared Longwave Pass Filters (IR LWP Filters):
  • Infrared Longwave Pass Filters (IR LWP Filters) transmit wavelengths longer than their specified 5% cut-on wavelength and block shorter wavelengths. 
  • Stock filters are optimized for collimated input at normal incidence and ambient temperature (0° AOI, f/inf, 298K).
  • Cut-on slope for standard products is <=5% and out-of-band (OOB) transmission levels are <=0.1% average and <=1% maximum in the cited blocking range. 
  • Custom IR LWP filters can be designed, manufactured, and verified to meet almost any spectral and/or system operating requirement.

• Infrared Shortwave Pass Filters (IR SWP Filters):
  • Infrared shortwave pass (SWP) filters transmit wavelengths shorter than their specified 5% cut-off wavelength and block longer wavelengths.  
  • Stock filters are optimized for collimated input at normal incidence and ambient temperature (0° AOI, f/inf, 298K). 
  • Out-of-band (OOB) transmission levels are <=0.1% average and <=1% maximum in the cited blocking range. 
  • Custom IR SWP filters can be designed, manufactured, and verified to meet almost any spectral and/or system operating requirement upon request.

• Far Infrared Anti Reflection (FIAR): The far infrared anti reflection coating will have less than 1% average reflection from 8 to 12 microns on an infrared substrate. It can be applied to silicon, germanium, zinc sulfide, zinc selenide and other infrared substrates.

• Protected Aluminum Coating: Protected aluminum mirrors are coated with aluminum and then protected with an overcoat, resulting in a mirror with an average reflection of over 96% in the far infrared (FIR). These mirrors meet all requirements of MIL-M-13508.

• Protective Gold Coating: The bare gold coating is a broadband high reflector in the near infrared (NIR) and far infrared (FIR). It has an average reflection of over 98% in the infrared.

• Protected Second Surface Silver Coating: The protected second surface silver coating has an average reflection of over 97% in the far infrared (FIR). It is used for internal reflection in prisms and mirrors.

Infrared and Far Infrared Photolithography

Reynard's photolithography department can create patterns as small as 8 microns on infrared substrates up to 14" in diameter. Coating materials such as Chrome, Aluminum, Gold and Black Chrome are used, in addition to more exotic materials for the far infrared (FIR). Applications include small covert infrared (IR) filters for the military market.
